DONIZETTI DIRETTORE DELLA MUSICA
From April 1825 to February 1826, Donizetti served as “Director of Music” at Palermo’s Teatro Carolino. Many other composers held the same position in theatres across Italy and Europe.
But who exactly was a “Director of Music”, and what did the role entail? What was the purpose of this professional figure, whose function and significance have never been fully explored?
This encounter sets out to shed new light on the subject, drawing on previously unpublished research by Edoardo Cavalli, presented here to the public for the first time.
