Siphonoforo, whose name is borrowed from a sea creature that lives in the Abyss, is a project of original music written and organised by guitarist Marco Pasinetti especially for the quartet's particular ensemble, starting from a careful study of bassless formations (from the trio of Jim Hall, Bob Brookmeyer and Jimmy Giuffre to that of Paul Motian, Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell). The absence of the bass guitar is not a vacuum to be filled at all costs, but an opportunity to take new approaches to the form and to give increased importance to melody. The result is music with a jazz feel but without most of the genre's characteristics, opening easily to tribal, ambient, rock and ethnic influences.
