by Roman Polański (Poland, 1962, 94’)
with Leon Niemczyk, Kolanta Umecka, Zygmunt Malanowicz

The Knife in the Water è the first feature film signed by Roman Polanski, then not yet 30 years old, and one of the most successful directorial debuts in the history of filmmaking: It was screened at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Fipresci Prize, and was the first Polish film to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film (it was beaten by Fellini 8½ by Fellini).
On the verge of leaving for a boat trip, a sports journalist and his wife load a young hitchhiker into their car and offer him to stay for the weekend trip. Thus begins a 24-hour cohabitation – in the cramped space of a sailboat, which becomes the scene of the psychological clash, both verbal and physical, between the two men, antagonists in a struggle that seems to have as its stakes the attention of the woman, mute observer of the virile dispute.
The soundtrack bears the signature of Krzysztof Komeda, a Polish pianist and composer considered one of the most original exponents of European jazz in the 1960s. His sextet, which included trumpeter Tomasz Stanko among others, remains one of the most valuable and innovative ensembles of that period. Komeda, who passed away in 1969, also wrote the music for Andrzej Wajda's Perverse Ingenuities and Janusz Morgenstern's Good Bye, Till Tomorrow, as well as Cul-de-sac, Please Don't Bite My Neck! and of Rosemary’s Baby by Polanski himself.
5pm.30 DANILO GALLO
Danilo Gallo electric bass, low balalaika, effects
Soundtrack to the film Kohlhiesels Töchter (Two Sisters) by Ernst Lubitsch
(Germany, 1920, 64‘)
with Jacob Tiedtke, Henny Portne, Emil Jannings, Gustav Von Wangenheim
Vaguely inspired by Shakespeare The Taming of the Shrew Two Sisters è set in an unspecified village in southern Bavaria, where young Xaver wants to fulfil his dream of love and marry the beautiful Gretel. Kohlhiesel, the girl's father, however, refuses to grant him the hand of his youngest daughter because he does not want her to marry before her elder sister Liesel. Unfortunately, no one approaches Liesel because of her ugliness. Xaver is already a goner when his friend Seppel gives him the solution: marry one sister first and then the other. The whirlwind of misunderstandings is guaranteed, as is the fun.
Danilo Gallo è one of the most versatile and popular Italian bassists, at ease in various stylistic contexts. He naturally ranges from jazz to rock, from improvised music to collaborations in which music interacts with other disciplines such as theatre, dance, poetry and cinema. È leader or co-leader of internationally renowned groups such as Dark Dry Tears, Gallo & The Roosters, Guano Padano, The Last Coat of Pink and the Lacy In The Sky with Diamonds project (with Roberto Ottaviano and Ferdinando Faraò). Among the many musicians with whom he has collaborated are: Uri Caine, Marc Ribot, Gary Lucas, Mike Patton, Bill Frisell, Rob Mazurek, Hamid Drake, Chris Speed, Jim Black, Wayne Horvitz, as well as the Italians Enrico Rava, Roberto Ottaviano, Gianluigi Trovesi, Francesco Bearzatti, Giancarlo Schiaffini.
