Nozzari, Rubini: tenors vs.

That of the eighteenth century was not opera for tenors: the seria, at least. Instead, in the comic genre they had found their habitat. At the end of the century, however, manly voices began to be demanded even from the heroes of serious melodrama, and that of tenor became established. Prominent tenors were born and trained in Bergamo and its territory, outstanding protagonists of the operas of first Rossini and then Donizetti. Among them were Andrea Nozzari and Giovanni Battista Rubini, capable of baritone sounds or stratospheric high notes: exceptional raw material in the hands of composers.
