Perfect strangers
Paolo Genovese signs his first theatre direction, bringing to the stage the adaptation of Perfetti sconosciuti, a brilliant comedy about friendship, love and betrayal, which will lead four couples of friends to confront each other and discover that they are “perfect strangers”.
Director, screenwriter and writer, Genovese è one of the most beloved authors of Italian cinema. From France to the United States, from Russia to China, Perfetti Sconosciuti has conquered audiences at the cinema and now arrives in the theatre as well, continuing to unveil the fragility of relationships and relations with unblemished precision. During a “normal” dinner, a group of friends decide to play a game of truth, which consists of putting mobile phones on the table and sharing messages and phone calls. This, however, will end up exposing them to each other's secrets, in a crescendo that transforms the playful experiment of the beginning into an unsuspected game of massacre. Eva and Rocco, married for years but in crisis, decide to organise a dinner at their home, inviting some of their
old friends: Cosimo and Bianca, newlyweds, he a taxi driver and she a veterinarian, who are desperate to have a child; Lele and Carlotta, also in a deep marital crisis, married for ten years and with two children; Peppe, a divorced and unemployed former PE teacher, who had promised to introduce his friends to his new partner Lucilla, who however could not take part in the dinner because of a bad fever. During the same evening, there is a lunar eclipse, the beginning of which coincides with the start of the dinner. At the table, the group finds themselves discussing a couple of mutual friends who have recently separated after the wife discovered on her husband’s mobile phone the messages the latter was exchanging with his lover. Inspired by this event, Eva decides to propose a “social experiment”: put their mobile phones on the table and let everyone know the content of every message or phone call received during the evening. Despite initial reluctance, everyone eventually decides to participate. What was supposed to be a simple game soon turns into a paradoxical tour de force of misunderstandings and unmentionable secrets that come to light, unleashing chaos within the house. Until they discover that they are “perfect strangers”.
