Born in Berlin to a French father and an African-American mother, Jacky Terrasson was defined by the French magazine Telerama “the pianist of happiness”. His approach to the keyboard, supported by an instrumental technique of the highest order, is in fact rhythmic, melodic and joyful. In other words: contagious and irresistible. A student at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, winner of the Thelonious Monk Competition in 1993, Jacky Terrasson has collaborated with singers such as Betty Carter, Cassandra Wilson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves and Cecile McLorin-Salvant. He has also played alongside Jimmy Scott, Charles Aznavour, Ry Cooder, vibraphonist Stefon Harris and trumpet player Wallace Roney. His piano style has been compared to that of great jazz piano masters such as Bud Powell and Ahmad Jamal. But there are also echoes of classical French composers such as Ravel, Fauré and Debussy. Jacky Terrasson is therefore an artist who does not only care about impressing with his prodigy, but is attentive to the nuances and to the balancing of different ingredients with symmetry.
