Film screening of
by Don Cheadle

Screened at the New York Film Festival in 2015 and the following year at the Sundance Film Festival,
Miles Ahead is a film by Don Cheadle, also the main actor of the film, more attributable to the
Blaxploitation strand than to the biopic genre, despite taking inspiration from the human story and
musical score by Miles Davis. Without prejudice to the artistic merits of the “prince of darkness”, the
most angular features of character, vices are emphasized. And this aspect has aroused more than a bad
mood in the jazz world. But if evaluated in its being, more precisely, an action film, a sort of “black”
detective, than a real biography of a musician, Don Cheadle’s film can excite the viewer, especially
because of that pressing cinematic rhythm that characterizes it from start to finish.
The soundtrack is amazing, alternating songs by Miles Davis himself and others who see his former
collaborators in action as Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock and “young lions” such as Robert Glasper,
Keyon Harrold and Esperanza Spalding.
