The collaboration between two international festivals is regularly renewed: the inevitable passing of the baton between Bergamo Film Meeting and Bergamo Jazz is also marked in 2020 by two appointments. It begins with the screening of René Clément’s Les Félins (Chrysanthemums for a crime), with Alain Delon and Jane Fonda. The film, released in 1964, is the first film shot in France by Jane Fonda, before meeting Roger Vadim. Based on the black novel Joy House by Day Keene, Les Félins naturally fits into the noir vein: the murky climate, between passion and crime, gives it a certain charm, mainly resulting from the claustrophobic environment that surrounds the characters, grappling with each other in an alienation that gradually leads to crime. The soundtrack is signed by Lalo Schifrin, composer and arranger well known also in the world of jazz.

The usual soundtrack of a silent film will follow: this time it is the turn of Herr Tartüff (Tartufo), a 1925 film, inspired by the eponymous theatrical piece by Moliére, which bears the seal of a film master, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. The task of live music belongs to the Star Splitter Duo, formed by the American trumpet player Rob Mazurek, a leading figure of the contemporary jazz avant-garde, and by his colleague of instrument Gabriele Mitelli, one of the most interesting exponents of the new Italian jazz.

Both specialists also in the use of computers and electronic effects Mazurek and Mitelli have devised a sound commentary for the special occasion that leaves ample space for improvisation.
